A Busy and Interesting Weekend for MDCC

British Leisure Show
MDCC's Go Ride coaches Paul Richardson and Nigel Shurben were at Windsor Race Course on Saturday afternoon supporting British Cycling's Go Ride team of Josie Heffernan and Graham MacNamee. They were providing young visitors to the Show with a variety of cycling skill and racing activities using BC provided bikes.

They had over 100 children taking part which made the afternoon well worthwhile in raisng the profile of cycling and MDCC in the area. Also there to help out from MDCC were John Percy, almost recovered from his broken collar bone, Andrew Payne and Rod Latchford. Thanks to all of them. We will have a a more extensive report in the next newsletter.

MDCC Tastes the Water in Majorca
This weekend several members flew out to Majorca for a few days training in the sun. Among them were Simon Greenland, John Cross and Gary Pritchard.
They'll be sending in a report shortly.

In Training for the Ventoux
Mark and Linda Regel had a good long-weekend training session down on the south coast at Eastbourne in preparation for tackling Mont Ventoux in June. The combination of strong winds and hills made them realise that the Ventoux is nothing compared to the South Downs in March.

MDCC 100km Reliability Trial

A Small But Select Band

Sarah and Derek prepare for the fray

Only 9 MDCC riders made it to the start this morning at Braywick Park with only 7 choosing to sign on for the 100+ km reliability trial. We hadn't planned on Mothers' Day being such an important event in our members' calendar.
On a much better day but with a head wind out to Benson all 7 remained together out to the control point. Derek decided to take a shorter route back from Benson as he was short of time. However as he'd already done the full route the day before he'd done more than most people this weekend.

On the way back with a following wind on much of the route Mike and Andrew took off to finish in under 4 hours followed by Jorg, who told me this was the furthest he'd ridden for quite some time. He must be aiming for the Club '10' handicap competition.

Last in under the watchful eye of Club Captain, Nigel Shurben, were Gurpal and Sarah with Sarah finding todays ride much easier having also completed the Chiltern Sportive last week. She is now leading the Sportive Championships. Full results on this later in the week.

Full results on our website for the Reliability Trial.

SHOCK! New MDCC Club '10' Record
Andrew Payne smashed the Club '10' record [ 19: 50] by 2 seconds yesterday in an open event west of Reading.
Please see photo at top of report. Andrew phones through the new record to Cycling Weekly while Mike can't really believe it. [ He's right! It was a short course]

West London Combine '10' Sunday, 7th March

The Happy Band of Brothers

Peter Weir prepares to start

First man off Andrew Payne A Cold Start To The Season But Pete Weir Is Red Hot
With temperatures only hovering around freezing this morning we were pleased to have 7 MDCC riders facing the starter as first men off on the Thicket Course.

Pete Weir finished with an impressive 23:05 saying it had all gone pretty well and he hadn't noticed the cold once he started riding. Pete was the fastest rider this morning out of a field of about 80 beating the second placed rider by over 50 seconds so a great start to the season.
Andrew Payne, well dressed up against the cold, has been putting in some serious training to start the season and opened his account with 25:38.
New members Ken Powell and Jorg James together with Rob Brockwell should consider riding a 3-up TTT together as they finished within 30 seconds of each other with 27's.
Nigel Shurben finished inside evens but wasn't that happy with his ride while Gurpal who has done little training this year was satisfied with a medium 32.

Our riders had in some ways the best of the conditions as the East wind was picking up for later riders. We were pleased to see all who entered riding. A fine example to other Clubs. Well done.

MDCC Results
Peter Weir 23:05
Andrew Payne 25:38
Rob Brockwell 27:01
Ken Powell 27:22
Jorg James 27:33
Nigel Shurben 29:21
Gurpal Panesar 32:18
Please note these times are 1,2 or 3 seconds faster than the official times as I stood on the finish line to take times.
Official result on the WLC website.
ps. apologies for the photos being the wrong way round. I can't get the blog to work.
