District Update

The London West DC meeting was held on 11 June. No major news regarding MDCC, although the request for a traffic count on the A4 was repeated.

The National 10 mile TT has been offered to LWDC for 2009. Unfortunately there are no courses in our Club's area suitable for hosting this event (2 days of events with a sufficiently large HQ for a full field of riders plus spectators). The most likely courses are H10/8 and H10/3(?IIRC), with the clubs most local to those roads organising the event.

UPDATE 26/6: Just heard that the 2008 event levies are £2 for Open events and £1 for Club. This increase was not mentioned at the last AGM & the DC are querying why the NC deems it necessary.

Midsummer Sunday

Sunday 24th is close to Midsummer and us crazy English are out in the midday sun, not that you could tell from the rain and cold wind (conditions for the Hilly 30 back in March were better!). The Club's 25 championship event was held slightly later than originally planned due to overlapping with Hounslow's 25. Little did we know that the new time would clash with (I think) Reading CTC's national bike week ride that was routed through Winkfield Plain, complete with marshals. Most of our riders knew the course and either the marshals recognised that lycra clad riders on disk wheel bikes were unlikely to be on a CTC ride, or we just ignored them. Unfortunately it was Ian's first time on the Fifield circuit & he was on a traditional frame with normal shorts and T so ended up in Windsor. Better luck next time. Results

I was up early so I could complete Hounslow's event before timekeeping ours, haven't got my time yet but by my stopwatch it was about 1:19. The last lap was tough, I'd guess about 31 minutes for the last 10 and I just couldn't keep my heart rate up - here's the plot (ignore the speed, the Polar software is doing something strange in the Km to mile conversion).

HighClere Sportif

Over the weekend 6 Maidenhead riders took part in the HighClere sportif. They all did extremely well and everyone made the gold (top) standard based on age. There were two distances; 74 miles and 120 miles. The tables shows the top finisher, our riders and the last finisher in each class to give an idea of the overall performance.

Sunday ride

Six riders turned out for the 9:30 Sunday ride. The weather was warm with little wind (a slight headwind on the home leg) - near perfect conditions. In a change to Dinton Pastures, we headed out towwards a garden centre in West Wycombe. The hilly way...

We headed north out of Maidenhead to the Bisham Abbey roundabout (reached max trip speed of 32.4 on the descent), over the suspension bridge into Marlow and up the Hilly 30 route to Frieth. From there we went straight on at the crossroads (where the Hilly turns left to the finish at the village hall) through Fingest and Ibstone. Then the route climbed up through a beech wood towards Christmas Common - a tough climb up a winding narrow lane where the top is always the next corner. A poor gear selection left a couple of riders trailing & I was glad of the Rockhopper's granny ring (5mph on middle ring, changed to granny and upped the cadence to achieve 8mph).

The distance was beginning to tell by this point, I was in real need of some food. Eventually we dropped down the A40 into West Wycombe and the garden centre/café for banana & cookies. After half an hour break, we saddled up for the home leg - right through Wycombe town centre (lots of stop/start) before the gentle drop through Wooburn Green and Bourne End.

Heart rate Monday morning was still elevated "Training Effect", so a gentle 10 ride to ease out the legs & evening off was in order and this AM it's back to normal.
